About Metal Clay
I made these earrings with Metal Clay. Metal clay is a type of clay that is made from metal particles mixed with a binder. It can be molded and shaped like regular clay, but when it is fired in a kiln, the binder burns away and the metal particles fuse together creating a piece of pure metal jewelry, in this case, pure sterling silver earrings.
The basic techniques I use with metal clay involve three different states:
Soft Clay techniques: I use different methods of shaping the soft clay which includes cutting, texturing, molding, and embellishments.
Dry Clay techniques: Also called the greenware stage. This is where I start the pre-finishing process which includes sanding, carving, and creating openings for rivets and eyelets.
Finishing techniques: After the piece has been fired and cooled the finishing process begins. This could include sanding, polishing, burnishing, and sometimes adding patina to certain pieces.
My end goal is always to create high quality that my customers will love.
